Last Resort (Installation)

					At the core of the installation lies an “intermediary space” (liminal space), where
warrior-figures in clothing-armor move: fighters of desire, imagination, and surviv-al. Drawing inspiration from the work of Carl Jung (Flying Saucers, 1958), the project
does not approach the “unknown” as an alien threat, but as a projection of the collec-
tive unconscious during times of crisis. The flying saucer is transformed into an “inter-
galactic mandala” of light and rhythm — a ritual space where trauma and transforma-
tion coexist.

					The work’s aesthetic dialogues with the movie Tron (1982) and 80s fashion, not as a
sterile revival, but as active memory. Garment is treated as a magical tool and an ar-
mor of identity, a practice of freedom against social violence and political repression.

					Armed with humor and the anarchic spirit of the Illuminatus! trilogy and the philoso-
phy of Discordianism, “Last Resort” proposes chaos as a cosmic principle. Through a
video synthesis of memory images and ironic political commentary, the viewer does not
merely watch, but crosses a transition zone. In this “disco-ritual”, the quest for a new
order, playful and unpredictable, renders “Last Resort” the ultimate sanctuary of subjectivity.

At its core is a metal loom, made of unorthodox materials, which bridges the materiality of the feminine tradition with the intangible richness of the lived experience. The loom acts as a transmitter: from its fibers emerge women’s voices, which are transported through headphones to seats arranged in a circle around the installation.
The narratives point the eye to the micro-scale of everyday life, highlighting the female experience as a central axis. Like a modern-day handiwork that invites people to gather around it, the installation creates a place of attention and togetherness.
Visitors are invited to sit down, listen to stories that rarely find their way to a public podium, and weave their personal meaning through these narratives. Individual listening is transformed into a collective experience, in which the audience forms a temporary community, an alliance around the act of joint listening.

Marina Velisioti’s artistic subjects for the works on view—as well as the source of endless inspiration for most of her practice—are UFOs and the alternative worlds of both fiction and crypto-science alike. The pieces included in the show revolve around sci-fi’s common accoutrement to alien planets and intergalactic travel: gates and portals. Taking an aesthetic cue from the style idiom and color schemes of the Memphis group’s bright 1980s neon hues and groundbreakingly postmodernist rearticulations of Art Deco geometry, Velisioti revivifies their programmatically anachronistic logic to create a visual and conceptual dialogue between the ancient and the speculative knowledge realms that invite the viewer to explore the space where reality and fantasy converge. In this way, the artist’s embroideries, floating along the gallery walls like portals to a different civilizational dimension, appear as if implements of some mythic pre-Columbian Incan ritual were to be designed by MTV’s art director circa 1984.


Velisioti’s bold deployment of color and decade-hopping suggest further and more profound implications, as well. When faced with new primary colors he’s never seen before, colors that don’t exist on Earth, and that the regular earthly vocabulary doesn’t have the language to justly describe, one of the protagonists of David Lindsay’s classic Art Deco-era sci-fi novel A Voyage to Arcturus finds himself in need to resort to the purely sensual: “Just as blue is delicate and mysterious, yellow clear and unsubtle, and red sanguine and passionate, he felt [the new colors] to be wild and painful; and dreamlike, devilish, and voluptuous.” In his analysis and critique of Lindsay’s conceptual invention, Fredric Jameson has once written that from it, we may posit an allegorical relationship between the two: to be able to imagine a new color is allegorical of being able to imagine a completely new social order, “for a new quality already begins to demand a new kind of perception, and that new perception in turn a new organ of perception, and that ultimately a new kind of body,” and, we might add, a new form of citizenship and society-building.


Velisioti’s installation is, indeed, enriched by a perpetually oscillating variety of sensual textures and haptic experiences: the stand-alone ceramic and textile pieces are interspersed by running tracks of self-adhesive mirror strips, adding complex layers to the viewer’s experience through the intermix of matt and reflective surfaces that multiply and distort the space, enhancing the idea of exiting into a different reality from the one that lays outside the gallery walls. The tactile nature of the ceramics and embroideries further contrasts with the ethereal quality of the mirrors, blurring the boundaries between the real and the imagined, the tangible and the optical. Finally, the fluorescent lamps in the light installations further contribute to this otherworldly ambiance, infusing the gallery with an eerie, dreamlike glow. Together, these elements invite the viewer to step into a world where time and perception are fluid, and the line between the known and the unknown remains constantly shifting.

		<description>SELASFOROS, 2023


	The visual and modular project “Selasphoros” (Marina Velisioti and Malvina Panagiotidi) has as its starting point the history of Arkoudospilios on the Akrotiri peninsula, Chania, Crete.

The project follows a narrative path, referring to caves, monasteries and archaeological sites of the region, as well as local mythologies. With stops at the Holy Trinity Monastery of Tzagarolo, Kathiana and Pazinos, actions and projects were carried out: Textiles, video art, installations in the landscape (land art).

Geometric Symbols over ancient buildings, a site-specific pre-installation plan gives life to ancient monumental and sacred
spaces that brings together the contemporary and the ancient. Reframes the historic site, as a place where not only
history but also contemporaneity is reflected. Exploring connections between the ancient, spirituality, technology and the
unknown. Buildings that used to be temples or sacred places with power, whose construction remains a mystery till today.
Ancient monuments made as if they're not of this world. Old and ruin monuments have still a secret and inexplicable power.
Collages on archive photographs and a woven tapestry on an electric loom are part of this unity.

The Queen is in the chamber of her dreams, 2022
Sheltered Gardens is a hybrid, visual arts exhibition featuring more than 35 international artists, writers and performers. Inspired by H.D.’s poem Sheltered Garden (1916) and taking place in J. &#38;amp; A. N. Diomedes Botanic Garden, one of the largest and most important botanical gardens in the Mediterranean, PCAI’s new multimedia programme includes numerous new commissions and performances. Opening on 22 September, Sheltered Gardens will unfold through an online, digital exhibition available at pcai.gr, a limited edition publication, a contemporary art group exhibition and a series of performances at the Diomedes Botanic Garden in Athens.


The exhibition is organised with the support and the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the support of the British Council and Flunet Productions.
